Turning Lived Experience Into Change

​

Pearl at the Mailbox brings a survivor-informed perspective to policy and legislative conversations involving grooming prevention, human trafficking, child protection, survivor protections, and accountability.

​

Our goal is not only to respond after exploitation has occurred. We work to identify gaps in laws and systems and advocate for changes that can strengthen protections, improve responses, and create opportunities for earlier intervention.

 

ADVOCACY THAT LEADS TO ACTION

Pearl at the Mailbox has contributed to legislative efforts that have resulted in laws being passed and signed in Arizona and at the federal level.

Our work includes collaborating with lawmakers, providing survivor-informed input, participating in policy discussions, testifying when appropriate, and helping decision-makers understand the realities of grooming and exploitation.

Every successful piece of legislation is the result of many people working together. We are proud to bring lived experience and a prevention-focused voice to that process.

 

WHAT WE ADVOCATE FOR

Our priorities include:

• Earlier recognition and intervention

• Stronger protections for children and vulnerable individuals

• Survivor-informed laws and policies

• Better protections for victims and survivors

• Accountability for those who exploit others

• Stronger responses when youth are missing or may have been lured

• Prevention-focused solutions before exploitation occurs

SURVIVORS BELONG AT THE TABLE

Lived experience can reveal gaps that may not be visible in reports, statistics, or policy discussions. Survivor voices should not simply be heard after policy is written. They should have a place at the table while policy is being shaped.

PREVENTION BELONGS IN POLICY

We cannot prevent every act of exploitation through legislation. But we can strengthen protections, close gaps, improve responses, increase accountability, and create more opportunities to intervene sooner. Education helps people recognize. Advocacy gives experience a voice. Legislation can help turn that voice into lasting change.​

Collaboration Strengthens Our Voice

Pearl at the Mailbox believes lasting change requires more than awareness. It requires survivors, lawmakers, professionals, and community partners working together.

​

Our founder, Sheri Lopez, also serves as President of the Arizona Human Trafficking Survivor Coalition, providing another avenue for survivor-led collaboration, advocacy, and legislative change across Arizona.

​

While Pearl at the Mailbox and the Coalition are separate organizations, they share a commitment to preventing exploitation, elevating survivor-informed solutions, and creating meaningful change.
